Just when you think the Bush Administration is done, when it looks like they have put it on cruise and can cause no more damage, they decide to do some more damage. Literally. They just gave the green light to blow up mountains. By approving a rule yesterday that makes it easier for coal companies to dump the debris from mountaintop mining into streams and river beds, they clear the way for more destruction. The euphemism “mountaintop mining” doesn’t really capture the destruction. Is it really mountaintop or mining if you blow off the top of the mountain to get to the coal? The complete destruction of such beautiful places to extract a fossil fuel… the environmental damage is from both directions.
